This is the first in a series of e-learning modules that were developed by the British Psychological Society in response to the Autism Act (2009) and the subsequent strategy for adults with autism, Fulfilling and rewarding lives. The autism strategy aims to increase understanding by improving awareness training for all front line public service staff, in line with their job needs, and developing specialist training for staff in health and social care. The modules won gold in the 2012 e-learning awards for 'Excellence in the production of learning content' and have been delivered to over 16,000 learners so far.

In this course you will find the answer to the key question "what is autism?", and also discover what it is like to have autism, how people with autism see the world, and how you can support someone with autism. This course will help you to learn more about autism and how it affects people. In Building awareness with adult autism, we will answer the following questions: What is the adult autism strategy? What is the autism spectrum? Diagnosing autism • What difficulties do people with autism have? How could communication be affected? How could social interaction be affected? How could flexible thinking/Imagination be affected? What is sensory sensitivity? What other difficulties do people with autism have? How can I support someone with autism?
