Quick Overview

This is the third in a series of e-learning modules that were developed by the British Psychological Society in response to the Autism Act (2009) and the subsequent strategy for adults with autism, Fulfilling and rewarding lives. The autism strategy aims to increase understanding by improving awareness training for all frontline public service staff, in line with their job needs, and developing specialist training for staff in health and social care. The modules won gold in the 2012 e-learning awards for 'Excellence in the production of learning content' and have been delivered to over 16,000 learners so far.

This course has been designed to support psychological work with adults with autism. This includes psychological assessment, formulation and treatment, but also covers areas such as training and consultation. It includes information about mental health difficulties experienced by people with autism. It is targeted at practitioner psychologists and psychological therapists, who will have some understanding of autism, to develop knowledge and skills for working with adults with autism experiencing psychological and mental health problems. Adults with autism should have the same access to mental health services, including psychological therapy services, as everyone else. Equality law (The Equality Act, 2010) recognises that bringing about equality for disabled people may mean changing the way in which services are delivered. This is the duty to make 'reasonable adjustments'. This course suggests ways of working and reasonable adjustments that psychological therapists can make to their practice to enable people with autism to access services as close to the standard offered to people without autism. The course also recommends ways to adapt existing models of therapeutic intervention to meet the needs of people with autism.
