The impact of child abuse on children, professionals and adult survivors 12 September 2016 Participants will be encouraged to critically examine the definitions of child abuse and neglect from a wider perspective including global, historical and regional aspects A review of the developmental impact that child abuse has across the life span as it affects physical and mental health-from attachment to trauma effects and the onset of adult negative coping strategies. Using their understanding of traumatic stress participants will be encouraged to see how the various stakeholders need to engage with each other within the context of the criminal justice and child welfare systems. An overview of best practices will be presented so that the participants can map out approaches they may take as they interface with children, families and other agencies to help prevent and intervene in the treatment of children and families at risk of abuse and neglect.
